After dull, drab winters finally we have bright, sunny summers as now we all can venture out from our cocoon’s and indulge in outdoor activities i.e. visits to beach, swimming, tennis etc However, sweltering heat and soaring temperature has given rise to a number of health problems and in summer the most prominent skin problem from which people suffers is skin tanning. While moderate sun rays has benign affect on skin but overexposure to sunlight can has an adverse affect on skin.
Sun tanning results from production of skin pigment (melanin) after exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun. While dark skinned people turn darker than white skinned people who turn red and burn from skin exposure. It occurs to body parts that are exposed to sun such as face, neck, arms and legs. It is not easy to get back to your normal state but with patience and proper care one can get rid of sun tan.
Tips to Prevent Sun Tanning
1. Avoid being out in sun’s peak hours
Refrain from going out when the sunrays is harsh and strong i.e. from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Stay indoors during these peak hours to avert sun damage.
2. Sun Block
Use a sun block with high Sun Protecting Factor as it prevents penetration of UVs rays to the skin. Ideally one should apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before straying out of the house. Reapply sun block after every 2 hours to minimize suntan.
3. Cover it up
Roll yourself in dark colored loose fitting full sleeved clothes when going out as it offers protection from UV rays. If it is not possible then wrap your face with a stroll or scarf. Wearing wide framed sunglasses and wide brimmed hat also offer protection from sun exposure.
4. Homemade Skin Pack
Homemade remedies works wonders against sun tan. There are number of homemade packs that can aid in detanning. Some of them are mentioned below.
- Apply tomato juice on your face, neck, hands and legs.
- Take a small piece of banana and apply it on skin for 15 mins and then wash off
- Rub a slice of papaya on the face and wash off after 10 mins.
Moderate exposure to sunlight is essential for one’s wellbeing as it helps in formation of melatonin and serotonin referred as the “feel good hormones” thus keeping one in elevated mood. But overexposure to sunlight can lead to suntan, moles, heatstroke etc. Thus one should keep one should restrict overexposure to sunrays to avoid its ill effects.
